NIGERIAN STUDENTS THREATEN NATIONWIDE SHUTDOWN OVER PROPOSED FUEL PRICE HIKE

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to embark on a nationwide protest following the Federal Government’s plans to increase the price of fuel in 2022 from N165 to N340. This was contained in a statement issued on Friday, November 26, by NANS president, Sunday Asefon.

Recall that the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, had announced that fuel subsidy will be removed in 2022 and fuel prices increased to N340 per litre.

In the statement, the association said it will join efforts with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other Civil Society Organizations to reject the fuel hike plans through a nationwide shutdown should the federal government proceed with its plan.

NANS, also condemned the proposal announced by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, that five thousand Naira will be paid to 40 million vulnerable Nigerians to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.
