LAUTECH ASUU vows to continue strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, Oyo State, has said any branch which breaks the strike will lose out from the benefits of the struggle, including infrastructural development.

ASUU said its members have resolved to continue with the strike and pursue it to a logical conclusion which is ‘imminent’.

The union, in a statement after its congress, said the government should not see himself or the students as target of the strike, but as beneficiaries because the intervention of most state governments, in terms of subvention, has been used as part-payment of salaries.

The statement was signed by the Chairman and Secretary, Professors Biodun Olaniran and Toyin Abegunrin. They were reacting to Governor Seyi Makinde’s threat to stop the school’s subvention until lecturers returned to the classrooms.

The union expressed surprise that the Commissioner for Education, on a radio programme, said the government had been paying LAUTECH 100 per cent subvention, though the university administration said only 55 per cent subvention comes from government while the 45 per cent balance is sought by the university through Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

The ASUU leaders said the government’s claim has further created distrust between the management and the unions.

According to ASUU, the responsibilities of capital projects have been totally abdicated and surrendered to TETFUND and NEEDS assessment projects of ASUU’s struggles.
