IBBUL ASUU, OTHER STAFF UNIONS CONSIDER SUSPENDING STRIKE ACTION AS NSHA INTERVENES

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other In-house staff Unions in Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai have agreed to reconsider their position in the ongoing national strike by University Staff Unions pending the outcome of interface between the State Legislature and the Executive.

This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Joint Action Congress(JAC) of the University, Comrade Adamu Isa during an interaction between the State House of Assembly, the University Management and the Unions held in the main chamber of the House.

Comrade Adamu Isa who is also the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) IBBUL Chapter, appreciated the State Legislature for their intervention and promised to get back to the House after a joint congress is held.

He said the strike which is a national one affected the University because of the derivable advantages in terms of some capital projects.

Other Union Chairmen who spoke also appreciated the State Legislature for deeming it necessary to resolve the impasse at the State level.

Speaking earlier, the Speaker, Honourable Abdullahi Bawa Wuse said the meeting was at the instance of the House following a motion on matters of Urgent Public Importance presented by member representing Kontagora I, Honourable Phalal Bako,on the need for the State University to suspend it strike.

He pointed out that the motion required the University ASUU and others to suspend their ongoing industrial action in the interest of the students, parents, the University and the State in general.

The Speaker, therefore, appealed to the University Unions to listen to the voices of reason and do what is expected of them at this crucial time in the life of the State and the nation.

He assured that the issues raised by the Unions would be tabled before the Executive arm of government in the State in order to improve on the University system

Honourable Wuse who appreciated most of the issues on ground thanked the Unions for their understanding and promised to get back to them immediately after thorough consultations.

Other members who contributed to the discussion were unanimous in the appeal to the Unions to sheath their swords.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abu Kasim Adamu who led members of the University Management to the House of Assembly, expressed concern over the effect of the industrial action on the life of the University, students, parents and the general public.

He added that thus far, IBB University, Lapai was already ahead of other States and Federal Universities in the the payment of Earned Allowances, stressing that promotions of staff for 2022 is already in the front burner.

The Vice Chancellor, therefore, appealed to the striking staff to resume work in the interest of the State.

Professor Adamu appreciated the State House of Assembly for the interface and assured that University Management would leave no stone unturned to ensure that the Institution continued to be the pride of Niger State.
