Almost all the higher institutions in Nigeria do change students courses. This habit of changing students courses has led some students not to continue with their education by rejecting the new courses given to them. Some students have written JAMB exam more than three times just to get the courses they want, but still only few used to make it.
These are the following reasons Institutions used to change students courses in Nigeria.
1. Departmental cut off mark: There is specific Jamb cut off mark for each department or course. Students who do reach the cut off mark courses can be changed if lucky or denied admission. For example, let assumed that the departmental cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery in University of Ilorin is 260. Those who applied for Medicine and Surgery and had below 260 will not get that course. A student that scored above 260 can also be denied if his or her competitors scored above him or her. For example, if student A had 270 in Jamb and 200 students had 290 in Jamb, and the institution want 150 students only for that course, the institution will change student A course if he or she is lucky.
2. Post Utme cut off mark : Some institutions do not write post utme exam, while some does. Some Institutions prefer this criteria in selecting students for admission. There are post utme cut off mark for all the courses. If student A had 399 in Jamb and failed the post utme his course will be changed if he or she is lucky. Some Institutions do physical screening as their post utme. So get prepared if your institution is among.
3. Incomplete O level result: This is very important, if you didn’t have complete O level result (five credits passes in main subjects) you may be denied admission, or they can change your course. This is applicable to those using two sittings for a competitive course.
4. Catchment Area: Most of the Nigeria institutions (except the private institutions) use this. Students from the catchment areas used to gain admission (easily) than those that are not from the catchment areas. Example, students in the North will find it difficult to gain admission into University of Lagos. If you are not from the catchment areas? Make sure you score high in your exams.
Advise: If the institution change your course, don’t reject the admission. Accept it and resume, then you can decide to write another jamb while still in school. And if you are denied admission, do not quit, keep trying.
