Representatives of National Universities Commission (NUC) on Friday, October 29, 2021, commended the management of the University of Lagos led by Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe FAS for the level of investment in e-learning facilities.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor’s office, representative of the National Universities Commission, Mrs. Funke Sule, said they are in UNILAG on inspection of the university’s E-Learning facilities, she noted that the NUC’s mission is in compliance with the drive to ensure an up-to-date e-learning system in all universities across the country.
Mrs. Sule, who was earlier at the Distance Learning Institute (DLI), University of Lagos where she was conducted round the e-learning facilities by the Director, Professor Uchenna Udeani said the e-learning drive being pursued by the NUC becomes imperative especially when viewed against the backdrop of the global pandemic which has make virtual learning the new normal across the world.
Speaking in the Vice-Chancellor’s office after the facility inspection, the NUC representative showered encomiums on the management of the University of Lagos for what she called an outstanding synergy and intelligent leadership prowess which attests to the reputation of scholarship with testimonies of several local and international grants and awards to the university.
While soliciting more expertise and increased funding with a view to ensuring Cyber security and optimization of the university’s large expanse of e-learning facilities, the NUC representative further emphasized the indispensability of E-Learning as a new normal which has improved accessibility to teaching and learning globally.
According to her, the Nigeria Universities Commission’s position on E-Learning is further anchored on its potentials to make learning more engaging for university students as well as the broadened access it guarantees to courses and programmes of other reputable Ivy League institutions world over.
While calling for efforts to be channeled into creation of stimulation laboratories, the NUC representative charged universities to develop more tools which would make E-Learning more applicable to Pharmacy, Law, Nursing and some other professions.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe FAS appreciated the NUC for its positive disposition towards the University of Lagos over the years.
Prof. Ogundipe however expressed concerns over the multi-layers of bureaucratic bottlenecks plaguing public institutions in Nigeria, one which he said, has practically eroded the powers and discretions of Vice-Chancellors to recruit identified talents and prospective experts into universities.
While appreciating the NUC team for the counsel and observations during its inspection, Prof. Ogundipe reaffirmed his charge to all federal agencies, ministries, departments and parastatals to stop meddling with the autonomy of universities especially as it related to recruitments and financial management.
