Lecturers working under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have been paid in full for the month of November 2022.The Federal Government was also said to be withholding the eight-month arrears.
In an interview with Punch correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday, a senior member of the union at Bayero University Kano confirmed this.
“Some of our members have started receiving salaries and I can confirm to you that we received our full salaries for the month of November. However, the arrears are still withheld.”
Recall that the Federal Government refused to pay the striking lecturers for the eight months which the union embarked on strike.
According to Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, academics will be paid pro-rata (half-pay) in October 2022.
Across the country, professors have been protesting the Federal Government’s decision.
The union’s National Executive Council is expected to hold a critical meeting in the coming days to discuss the withheld salaries.
This is a developing story…
