A 100-level female student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Salako Treasure, has allegedly taken sniper fire and killed herself.
Treasure, who was a student in the Department of Entrepreneurs, was found dead in an uncompleted building in the Lagere area, on Wednesday, after she went missing. The lady was found dead with a bottle of sniper, which she was suspected to have drunk.
Management of the university confirmed the death, expressing displeasure over the purported suicide by the student.
The Public Relations Officer of OAU, Abiodun Olanrewaju, said: “It is very unfortunate that we had lost a part one student, a promising young lady to what was alleged to be suicide.
“Although it happened outside campus, we are not happy that we could lose such a person under such circumstances. The university, under the administration of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, is concerned that a student of that tender age could resort to such a thing.
“We appeal to Nigerians to be our brother’s keeper. The feeler we are getting is that she had suffered depression and people around her knew about it, they ought to have referred her to someone elderly or someone who could be of help to her with psycho-emotional assistance.
“We sympathise with ourselves, especially the parents who lost a young bright lady. I want to admonish you that this world is filled with ups and downs. Emotional, psychological, academic frustrations should not make anyone resort to taking his or her life,” Olanrewaju stated.
He said the remains of the deceased have been evacuated with the involvement of the police.
