ASUU suspends its longest industrial action in history. Students who seem to have been paralyzed academically as a result of this melt down are once again rejuvenated while preparing for resumption.
It should be recalled that on Tuesday, 22nd of December 2020, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, made an hopeful statement that the ongoing strike by university lecturers would soon be called off, while also noting that the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi said that there would be a Press Conference scheduled to hold today where the decisions of Asuu and its organs would be announced.
ASUU, at the press briefing today, has agreed to “conditionally” suspend its 9 months old strike while reaffirming that it would embark on another strike with no warnings if Federal Government renege on their agreement.
Professor Ogunyemi also appreciated students in all public varsities for their understanding throughout the crucial period, mentioning that “no amount of sacrifice would be too much to get the matter resolved as long as the government is consistent with its commitments.”
However, the ASUU chairman noted that the ball is in the court of Federal Government to determine the reopening of schools and academic activities due to the Covid-19 resurgence in the country.
Meanwhile, Ekiti state university chapter of the national union is yet to suspend its industrial action owing to lingering spates of issues with the institution’s management.
While speaking with the chairman of Asuu-Eksu, Dr. Arogundade expressed that the local union will hold a meeting tomorrow 24th December to discuss the fate of the state varsity position in the recent development.
