Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholarships 2020-2021 for African Undergraduates

The Jim Ovia Scholarship Program was established in 1998. It is funded entirely by Mr Jim Ovia to provide financial assistance to distinguished young people in Nigeria and entire African countries.

The scholarship was previously known as the MUSTE Scholarship. Eligible beneficiaries receive support for their undergraduate and postgraduate studies during the duration of their program and include tuition and maintenance fees.

The program offers an average of 100 opportunities each year for new applicants, while renewal candidates receive annual support, provided they meet all the requirements for the scholarship.

Since October 2010, Mr Ovia has invested more than 100 million nairas in the program to help 1,500 beneficiaries.

By creating the Jim Ovia Scholarship, Ovia hoped to create a network of future leaders in Nigeria who could compete globally with their peers, bring new ideas, create and commit to improving lives and circumstances of people in their respective communities.

How is Jim Ovia Leaders Scholarship Awarded?

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of personal intellectual ability, leadership capacity and willingness to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout Africa by serving their community and putting their talent and knowledge to work to improve the lives of people.

Others Over time, recipients of Jim Ovia Scholarships should become leaders in helping to address health, technology and financial challenges, all areas in which the foundation is deeply committed.

Level/Field of Study

The Scholarship is intended for students pursuing Undergraduate Studies in any STEM courses: science, technology, engineering and mathematics or related courses.

Host Country

The scholarship will be hosted and taken in Nigeria.

Eligible Countries

The scholarship is open to all African students residing in any African country.

However, only 100 applicants will be selected with twenty-Five per cent of them being Nigerians.

How much is Jim Ovia Scholarship?

The Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholars will receive the following benefits:

  1. Comprehensive Scholarships: the Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholarship will provide tuition, room, and board for undergraduate study.
  2. Career Support and Opportunities: Scholarship recipients will receive career counselling and support while still students and also after graduation.
  3. AAI Global Alumni Network: Recipients of the Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholarship will graduate into one of the most prestigious alumni networks. AAI Alumni include prominent leaders in many sectors around Africa and the Globe and includes two sitting Presidents. Scholarship recipients will be connected to this network for potential opportunities, mentorship and the ability to collectively continue towards developing the continent.

Eligibility Criteria

As stated earlier, these scholarships are awarded on the basis of personal intellectual ability, leadership capability and a desire to contribute to society at large to improve the lives of others.

However, students must also meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a citizen of an African country, residing in Africa
  • Exhibit strong academic record and penchant for high-achievement
  • Demonstrate a Financial Need
  • Present an active record of youth leadership within his/her community
  • Applicants whose first language is not English are to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level by the University.

What Documentation is Required for my Application?

The following documents are required to submit a full application for a New or Renewal Scholarship Award. Please note that all scanned copies must be of the original document, photocopied scans will not be accepted.

New Applicant’s documentation:

a)    Completed online application

b)    Valid Government ID (e.g. International passport, Voter’s Card, National ID or Driver’s License)

Please note that a certificate of origin or birth certificate will not be accepted as a valid form of ID. The only exception will be for minors below the age of 18 years who are unable to apply for a government ID. In which case, a birth certificate will be accepted in lieu of a government ID for such minors.

c)    An official original letter (not photocopied) letter from your school/Head of Department stating the following:

  • Your full-name
  • Course Title
  • Department of Study
  • CGPA
  • Gender
  • Matriculation number

OR

  • Newly matriculated who have not yet received a matriculation number or school ID must provide a provisional admission letter to their institution of study.

d)    Original Secondary School Certificate (WAEC or NECO)

e)    Original JAMB result certificate

f)     A valid student ID for your host institution (University/College)

g)    A passport photograph

Renewing Applicant’s documentation:

a)    Completed online application

b)    Valid Government ID (e.g. International passport, Voter’s Card, National ID or Driver’s License)

Will my Documentation be Verified?

All submitted documents will be verified by the scholarship selection committee. Applicants found to have submitted false information or unverifiable or forged documents will no longer be eligible to apply for the Jim Ovia Scholars Program.
