Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the following programmes of the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Abuja (Affiliated to University of Maiduguiri) for the 2020/2021 academic session.
About the Institute
The International Institute of Journalism is located in Area 11 Garki, Abuja, the Federal Capital City and the administrative centre of Nigeria.
Graduates of the Institute enjoy successful careers in the media, diplomatic corps and civil services and in the private sector in Nigeria and other countries.
The Institute has been recognised by the Nigerian Press Council as a professional Institute for the training of Journalists in accordance with NPC Decree 85 of 1992. The Institute also has linkages with educational institutes and professional Organizations in the country which offer similar courses to enable her graduands use their certificates for entry into the universities and other educational institutions of their choice in Nigeria.
The Institute is run by a Board headed by a Chairman and Members constituted by the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
A Director appointed by the Board heads the school’s management. The Academic Board, a Registrar and members of academic and non-academic staff assist him. Learning and teaching facilities are provided at the Institute located at Area 11, Garki Abuja which also serves as the temporary secretariat of the NUJ. Adequate facilities for teaching and research have been provided in the Institute. A Computer Centre with adequate facilities for training students on the latest techniques in journalism is also available at the Institute.

Academic Activities
The International Institute of Journalism provides professional training for Nigerian and Foreign students in Journalism, Mass Communication, Advertising, Public Relations, Computer Studies, French and Arabic language programmes. It has lecturers and resource persons drawn from the academia, practitioners with many years of professional practice in the various media, public relations and advertising executives and managers of media enterprises.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for the Institute’s courses must satisfy the Institute that their educational background and aptitude are sufficient to enable them benefit from their choice of courses. Foreign students must in addition, show evidence of proficiency in English language.
A. Diploma Courses
Candidates are expected to possess a minimum of four credits at GCE ordinary level or SSCE or their equivalents at not more than two sittings. In addition, they must have a credit in English language.
B. Post Graduate Diploma
Candidates for postgraduate courses must possess a Degree, HND or their equivalents from recognized institutions of learning in Nigeria and abroad.
Grading of Examination
The Institute uses the A-F system of grading
- A – Excellent
- B – Very Good
- C – Good
- D – Fair
- E – Pass
- F – Fail
Grading and examination results are issued to students at the end of each semester while the Registrar’s office which also serves as the admission office, keeps the permanent records of all students. Certificates are graded using the NUC and NBTE criteria.
- 4.50 – 5.00 Distinction
- 4.00 – 4.49 Upper Credit
- 3.00 – 3.99 Lower Credit
- 1.50 – 2.99 Pass
- Below – 1.50 Fail
Requirement for the Award of Diplomas and Certificates
- Student must have reached an adequate standard in his/her work and examinations
- The attendance record must be satisfactory
- All the stipulated fees must have been fully paid
- Students must complete given curricular as set forth by the Institute’s management
- He/She must have obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 1.50.
Tuition Fees and other Charges
Note: Tuition fees are subject to change without prior notice. The Board of Governors may institute new fees as the need arises. Students should check with the Registrar for up-todate information concerning this.
In addition to Tuition Fees, students also pay an acceptance fee whose value is fixed by the school’s Board. In addition, they are expected to pay a prescribed supervision fee in the year of graduation to facilitate adequate supervision of their projects. Other charges may be paid as directed by the school Board.
Programmes of Study
The Institute offers a variety of courses. In selecting one, students must be sure that they have the requisite educational qualifications and professional expertise to enroll for such a particular programme.
The programmes are designed to give students high level education to prepare them for professional careers in the various areas of Mass Communication, Print Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Public Relations andAdvertising.
The Institute offers the following academic and professional programmes:
1. Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism (PGD)
Duration: One year.
Qualifications: BA, B Sc., HND or Postgraduate degree in any discipline of study other than Mass Communication.
2. Postgraduate Diploma in Public Relations andAdvertising (PGDAP).
Duration: One year
Qualifications: As Above
3. Higher National Diploma in Journalism (HD)
Duration: Two years
Qualifications: OND in Mass Communication/Journalism from IIJ or any other school.
4. Diploma in Journalism (OND)
Duration: Two years
Qualifications: SSCE, GCE with credit passes in four subjects including English Language. Matured student with several years of media experience may be considered.
Programmes Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives of the programmes of the Institute in Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations are as follows:
A. To give students a high level of education and professional skills required to function effectively in any aspect of the mass media industry.
B. To act as a springboard for advanced studies in any area of Mass Communication.
C. At the end of the programme, graduates of the Institute should be able to do the following:
- Gather, investigate and report news for the print and broadcast media.
- Select, edit and prepare news items, features, photographic materials for the print and broadcast media.
- Produce, present and direct programmes for the electronic media.
- Plan, prepare and execute Public Relations and Advertising programmes as well as be able to organize and manage marketing communication organization at all levels
Special French Programmes
In consideration of the geo-political location of the country, surrounded at all borders by French speaking countries (Tchad, Niger, Benin Republic and Cameroon), the school introduced it’s French programmes to train Nigerians who desire to meet up with the demands of today’s society.
A. Beginners’ French Level 1
For those who do not have any knowledge of the French language but desire to learn.
B. Beginners’ French 2
For those with some knowledge of the French language and who would like to improve on their competence.Course Duration: 20 weeks for each level
Time: 5.00pm 7:00 pm (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays).
The time is flexible and could be arranged at the convenience of the parties involved
Venue: International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), NUJ National Secretariat,Area 11, Garki Abuja or any other place of choice of the other party.
Special programmes are also organized for Civil Servants, Diplomats, Businessmen and Protocol Officers to suit their areas of interest. These courses are also arranged to take place at the client’s place of choice and at convenient times.
Semesters and Course Load
The International Institute runs full-time courses lasting 2 semesters each year.
1st Semester – October – March
2nd Semester – March – July
Each student is enrolled at the Institute for at least 12 semester credits. They are subject to continuous assessment system throughout their programme and are required to write a project at the end of their courses under appointed Supervisors.
Students should note that all the courses offered each semester are compulsory
