You all should be informed that aside the official JAMB Cut Off Marks released by the University management as regards Admission which qualifies you for Post UTME Registration, the University DO NOT usually publicly release any other modalities for calculating aggregate scores to be qualified for admission.
The University shall adopt the Point Grade System (PGS). Your UTME and Post UTME Score as well as your O’Level Grades shall be INTERNALLY screened for you to be considered for admission to your registered choice of course. Your Post UTME score shall be displayed on your portal hours after you sit your exam.
The University aggregates of all these results shall be arrived at with formula best known to the University community and as such beware of misleading information on social media or other search engine posted by unguided bloggers. There are so many factors that determines your admission into the University community.
First, the University admit candidates based on Merit. This category are for very few candidates who go above board as far as their results is concerned. A percentage of the admission quota would be awarded to this category of candidates without stress, they’re usually the first sets of candidates to be admitted.
Second, the University adopt Catchment Areas. These are states within the University geopolitical zone which is North Central; Benue, FCT, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger & Plateau. This is not to be confused with state of origin as falsely claimed by many. The University do not make use of Ilorin or no Ilorin Indigene for the admission exercise.
Third, ELDS which stands for Educationally Less Developed States. A percentage are usually awarded to candidates from educationally backwarded states. ELDS only applies to a federal government-owned University and they occupy 20% out of the total carrying capacity of the Course or school in question. There are about 23 ELDS in Nigeria.
Also, the Federal Character Principle. This is another determinant of Admission. This principle mandates federal parastatals/institutions to share fairly resources within the nation’s capacity among the different regions/ethnic groups in the country.
All Universities however have a carrying capacity.
Admission Quota represents the number of candidates that should be admitted into the tertiary institutions in one academic year from each state. The school cannot however admit more than its carrying capacity.
From the analysis above, it should be clear to you that if your department is expected to admit just 100 students and more than 150 candidates (including you for instance) scored above 290 in JAMB, all of you cannot be admitted, a portion of you would be given Merit Admission, others may later gain benefits of other admission determinants but you should be informed that those who score below 290 may also be admitted before you if they fall within any of the other admission determinants such as the ELDS.
The University admission process may look pale but it’s procedural. Do yourself good by painstakingly and studiously getting yourself prepared and set for the Post UTME. Score higher so that you can boost your chance(s) of getting admitted.
